Just like conventional firearms, most airsoft rifles are designed with both lower and upper receivers. Using separate airsoft receivers makes it possible to easily customize your rifle to your specifications. We offer both complete receivers, separate receivers, as well as parts kits so you can perfect your build and get the best results for your team. We also carry several metal receivers that will offer amazing reliability as well as a realistic look and feel during play.
AIRSOFT RECEIVERS
Airsoft Receivers | Upper and Lower Receivers for Every Platform
The receiver is the core housing everything else on your gun bolts to, the barrel, the stock, the handguard, and on most AEGs, the gearbox itself. A cracked, mismatched, or low-quality receiver undermines every other upgrade you put into a build. We carry airsoft upper and lower receivers across M4, AK, and other major platforms, in polymer, metal alloy, and CNC aluminum.
Airsoft Upper and Lower Receivers Explained
Most rifle-pattern airsoft guns split the receiver into two halves. The upper receiver houses the outer barrel, inner barrel, and hop-up unit, while the lower receiver holds the trigger group, fire selector, grip, and on most electric AEGs, some or all of the gearbox itself. Together they form the structural core the rest of the gun mounts to.
Airsoft Receiver Materials: Polymer, Zinc Alloy, and Aluminum
Receiver material is one of the biggest factors in a build's overall durability:
- Polymer: Lightweight and budget-friendly, common on entry-level and sport-line replicas. Fine for casual play, but more prone to flex and wear over heavy use.
- Zinc alloy (pot metal): The standard on many mid-tier metal guns. Solid for regular use, but can develop stress fractures around the buffer tube threads if overtightened.
- CNC machined or forged aluminum: The premium option, offering the highest strength and the most resistance to wear, stripped threads, and stress cracking under repeated use.
Airsoft M4 and AR-Pattern Receivers
M4 and AR-15-pattern receivers are the most common on the market and generally share the widest compatibility with aftermarket parts. Confirm your exact receiver's buffer tube threading and gearbox mounting points before ordering a replacement, since small dimensional differences between manufacturers can prevent a gearbox from seating correctly even on the same general platform.
Airsoft AK-Pattern Receivers
AK-pattern receivers, upper and lower, differ meaningfully from the M4 layout, both in shape and in how the gearbox seats inside. Underfolder and railed upper receiver variants add further platform-specific differences, so confirm your exact AK variant before ordering a receiver swap.
Airsoft Receivers for Other Platforms
Beyond M4 and AK families, platforms like the AUG, G3, G36, and HK416 each use their own receiver shape and internal layout. A receiver built for one of these platforms is not interchangeable with another, even when the guns look broadly similar from the outside.
Airsoft Gearbox Fit and Receiver Compatibility
One of the most common frustrations with a receiver swap is a gearbox that doesn't seat correctly in the new housing. This usually comes down to small dimensional differences between manufacturers rather than a fundamentally incompatible part. Confirm your gearbox version and your target receiver's specified compatibility before ordering, rather than assuming any M4-pattern receiver will accept any M4-pattern gearbox.
What to Look for in an Airsoft Receiver
Once you've settled on a platform and material, a few details determine whether the swap goes smoothly.
Gearbox Compatibility
Confirm your gearbox version (commonly a V2 or V3 pattern) is explicitly listed as compatible with the specific receiver you're ordering, since general platform compatibility alone isn't a guarantee.
Buffer Tube Threading
Threading can vary slightly between manufacturers even on the same general platform. A mismatched thread pitch can strip under tightening rather than seating cleanly.
Material for Your Use Case
Polymer is fine for casual, lower-intensity play. If you're running frequent games or a heavier build, CNC aluminum resists wear and stress cracking far better over time.
Airsoft Receiver FAQ
What's the difference between an upper and lower receiver?
The upper houses the outer barrel, inner barrel, and hop-up unit. The lower holds the trigger group, fire selector, grip, and on most AEGs, some or all of the gearbox.
Will any gearbox fit any M4-pattern receiver?
Not always. Small dimensional differences between manufacturers can prevent a gearbox from seating correctly, even within the same general platform family. Confirm compatibility before ordering.
Is a metal receiver always better than polymer?
For durability under heavy use, generally yes. But polymer receivers are lighter and perfectly serviceable for casual, lower-intensity play.
Why did my receiver crack near the buffer tube threads?
This is a known failure point on zinc alloy (pot metal) receivers when the buffer tube is overtightened. CNC aluminum receivers resist this kind of stress fracture better.
Are AK and M4 receivers interchangeable?
No. The two platforms use fundamentally different receiver shapes and gearbox mounting layouts, and parts are not interchangeable between them.
