BEARINGS & BUSHINGS
Airsoft Bearings and Bushings | Gear Axle Support for Every Build
Bearings and bushings support your gear axles as they spin thousands of times per game, and the choice between them changes based on how hard your build runs. We carry airsoft ball bearings and bushings across the common 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, and 9mm sizes.
Airsoft Ball Bearings
Ball bearings contain tiny internal roller balls that let gear axles spin with minimal friction, reducing mechanical resistance, lowering heat buildup, and helping push rate of fire higher on a high-speed setup. The tradeoff is durability: ball bearings are more prone to shattering under heavy stress, high FPS, or heavy spring loads, generally not recommended past roughly an M120 spring unless using a high-grade bearing built for that stress.
Airsoft Bushings
Bushings are solid, one-piece metal rings, commonly CNC steel or bronze, with a center hole for the gear axle. They're exceptionally durable and hold up under heavy loads with virtually no shattering risk, at the cost of slightly higher surface friction than ball bearings if not properly shimmed and lubricated. Bushings are the standard choice for high-stress, high-FPS, or heavy-torque builds.
Mixing Airsoft Bearings and Bushings in One Gearbox
Many builds don't run one type across every axle position. A common approach uses a solid steel bushing under the spur gear and sector gear, where stress is highest, while running ball bearings on the less-burdened bevel gear axle to keep some of the friction-reduction benefit where the stress is lower.
Airsoft Bearing and Bushing Sizing
Outer diameter needs to match your gearbox shell's casing holes precisely. Standard sizes include 6mm (older or budget gearboxes), 7mm, 8mm (the most common size in modern standard gearboxes), 9mm, and specialty 10mm options. Confirm your exact gearbox's casing hole size before ordering, since an undersized or oversized bearing won't seat correctly.
What to Look for in Airsoft Bearings and Bushings
Once you know your build's stress level and gearbox sizing, a few details determine the right choice.
Spring Weight Compatibility
Ball bearings suit lighter to moderate spring weights. Heavier springs call for bushings or high-grade reinforced bearings built specifically for that added stress.
Exact Diameter Match
Confirm your gearbox's casing hole diameter precisely rather than assuming a standard size, since a mismatch prevents proper seating.
Shimming and Lubrication
Bushings need proper shimming and lubrication to minimize their higher surface friction. Skipping this step undercuts one of their main advantages over bearings.
Airsoft Bearing and Bushing FAQ
Should I use bearings or bushings for a high-FPS build?
Bushings. They hold up far better under heavy spring loads and high stress than ball bearings, which are more prone to shattering past roughly an M120 spring.
Can I mix bearings and bushings in the same gearbox?
Yes, and many techs do. A common setup runs steel bushings under the spur and sector gears, where stress is highest, and ball bearings on the bevel gear axle.
What size bearing or bushing do I need?
Match the outer diameter precisely to your gearbox's casing holes. 8mm is the most common size on modern standard gearboxes, but confirm your exact spec rather than assuming.
Why do my bushings feel like they're adding friction?
Bushings do have higher surface friction than ball bearings by design. Proper shimming and lubrication minimize this, so check both before assuming the part itself is the problem.
Do ball bearings really increase rate of fire?
Yes, by reducing mechanical resistance on the gear axles, which helps on a high-speed setup, though this comes with reduced durability under heavier spring loads.
