GEARBOX
Airsoft Gearboxes | Version 2, Version 3, and Platform-Specific Options
The gearbox is the mechanical and electrical core of an AEG, the housing that turns your trigger pull into a fired shot through motor, gears, spring, and piston working in sequence. We carry airsoft gearboxes across Version 2, Version 3, and other platform-specific designs.
How an Airsoft Gearbox Works
Pulling the trigger closes an electrical circuit that spins the motor. The motor turns a set of three gears, bevel, spur, and sector, which pull a spring-loaded piston back against the mainspring. When the sector gear releases the piston, the spring drives it forward inside the cylinder, pushing air through the nozzle and out to the BB.
Airsoft Version 2 Gearboxes
Version 2 (V2) is the most common gearbox design on the market, found in most M4, M16, and AR-15-pattern airsoft rifles. Its widespread use means the largest selection of aftermarket internal parts and pre-built options is generally built around this version first.
Airsoft Version 3 Gearboxes
Version 3 (V3) is a sturdier design typically used in AK-47 and G36-pattern platforms, featuring an enclosed motor cage that differs structurally from the V2 layout. Parts built for a V2 gearbox generally don't transfer to a V3 shell, so confirm your exact version before ordering internals.
Other Airsoft Gearbox Versions
Specialized platforms use their own gearbox versions outside the V2/V3 mainstream, including designs built specifically for P90-pattern guns and other unique submachine gun replicas. These see a smaller aftermarket parts selection simply due to lower overall demand compared to V2 and V3.
Pre-Built vs. Building Your Own Airsoft Gearbox
A pre-built gearbox comes assembled and tuned from the factory or a tech shop, a faster route to a working upgrade if you don't want to source and fit every internal part yourself. Building your own from individual parts gives you full control over the exact spec at every stage, gears, spring, motor, shimming, at the cost of more time and technical know-how.
What to Look for in an Airsoft Gearbox
Once you know your platform's gearbox version, a few details determine whether the swap goes smoothly.
Version Match
Confirm V2, V3, or another specific version before ordering, since parts and full gearbox shells are not interchangeable across versions.
Shell Material
Reinforced or CNC-machined shells resist cracking under heavy spring tension better than stock cast shells, particularly on high-FPS builds.
Pre-Wired vs. Bare
Some gearboxes come pre-wired with a MOSFET or trigger contacts already installed, others require you to wire the electronics yourself. Confirm which you're getting before ordering.
Airsoft Gearbox FAQ
What gearbox version does my M4 use?
Almost certainly Version 2, the standard design across most M4, M16, and AR-15-pattern airsoft rifles.
Can I put V2 internal parts in a V3 gearbox?
No. The two versions use different shell designs and internal layouts, so parts generally don't cross over between them.
Should I buy a pre-built gearbox or build my own?
A pre-built gearbox is faster if you want a working upgrade without sourcing individual parts. Building your own gives you more control over the exact spec, at the cost of more time and technical skill.
Why does my AK use a different gearbox than my M4?
AK-pattern platforms typically use a Version 3 gearbox, a sturdier design with an enclosed motor cage, structurally different from the Version 2 design common on M4-pattern guns.
Do all gearbox shells crack under heavy springs?
Not all, but stock cast shells are more prone to it than reinforced or CNC-machined shells, particularly at higher FPS levels.
