All the Top Questions, Rounded Up by Our Airsoft Store

Aug 21st 2023

There are a lot of (what we consider to be) questions with fairly obvious answers on the internet.

So the experts at our airsoft store rounded them up and answered them.

Is Airsoft More Painful Than Paintball?

It depends on where you get hit, but almost never. The BBs can sting on exposed skin, but paintballs carry more mass and can really hurt if they hit exposed skin up close.

Is Airsoft OK for 12-Year-Olds?

That depends on if the 12-year-old is mature enough to responsibly and safely handle the equipment and play. That’s for you as the parent to decide.

Is It Safe for 8-Year-Olds?

Same answer, but for most, 8 years old may be a little young. Use your best judgment as a parent, but some arenas may still let 8-year olds participate.

At What Age Can Kids Play in Airsoft Events?

In general there is no minimum age for participation, and players of all ages can compete. If you have specific questions contact the administrator of an event. Some fields require players under a certain age to use a full facemask instead of just goggles, for instance.

What Is Better Airsoft or a Gun?

This is sort of a ridiculous question, like, “what is better, a screwdriver or a hammer?” They’re not used for the same things.

An airsoft gun is for playing airsoft, which is a sport. A gun is better if you’re hunting or participate in competitive shooting.

Obviously they are not used for the same things.

What Is the Youngest Age to Own an Airsoft Gun?

While airsoft guns are not federally classified as firearms, in most areas of the country, you must be 18 years of age or older to purchase one. However, younger players can still play with the consent of a legal guardian (and of course, pursuant to all local laws, regulations, and event rules).

Can You Take the Orange Tip Off an Airsoft Gun?

As long as you own it and do not sell it, it is not illegal for you to remove the orange tip. However, that may vary according to local laws and regulations so make sure you are familiar with these.

Can You Use Knives in an Event?

Some airsoft events may allow “knife kills” with plastic or soft rubber knife replicas. When in doubt, ask the organizer of the event. Never attempt to stab with a replica knife; do not throw it either. Gently slice or make a cutting motion toward the opponent’s torso.

Can I Shoot Airsoft Guns in My Backyard?

If you own the property and there are no local discharge ordinances or safety zone regulations, then it is probably legal to shoot them in your backyard. There are some additional laws surrounding possession on public property, though.

Where Can I Play Airsoft?

MilSim and airsoft events are the best places to play competitively. See our events page via the previous link to learn more, or visit an airsoft store near you.

Can an Airsoft Gun Do Damage?

Not really, especially when you are wearing several layers of protective airsoft gear. Up close, a BB can chip a tooth or injure your eyes, though, which is why you should never play without goggles or a face mask.

Can Airsoft Guns Kill Squirrels?

Unlikely, but all the same, you shouldn’t try. All you’re going to do is hurt the squirrel. It would be almost impossible to kill a squirrel with one. Check our previous blog for more detailed information.

What Do Airsoft Guns Shoot?

They shoot special airsoft ammo, small spherical projectiles also sometimes called BBs. The best BBs are polished, one-piece BBs.

Are Airsoft Guns Dangerous?

They can injure your eyes and chip teeth up close, and will sting on exposed skin, but other than that are not particularly dangerous if handled responsibly.

How Far Can Airsoft Guns Shoot?

Most can shoot 100 to 200 feet accurately, with some particularly accurate and powerful models like airsoft sniper rifles reaching around 200 to 300 feet effectively. Some may be able to shoot farther but not that accurately.

Is Airsoft Expensive?

It can be extremely expensive but it can also be very affordable. There are plenty of beginner airsoft guns that are less than $200 (like the G&G Raider) and which still offer great performance.

What Is the Max FPS in Airsoft?

That depends on the internals of the platform. Probably, the majority of them offer muzzle velocities between 200-400 FPS. Many powerful models can exceed 400 FPS, and if you update the spring and motor, it’s possible to break 500 FPS. You may not be able to play with a platform this powerful, though.

What Tactical Gear Do You Need to Play?

If you want to play in this sport, you need at least an AEG and the right safety gear (goggles or a face mask).

This is, however, the bare minimum. Most players also carry:

  • A sidearm (airsoft pistol)
  • Cases for your AEG and sidearm
  • Spare ammo
  • Gas or batteries
  • Spare magazines
  • Speed loaders
  • Cleaning and maintenance supplies
  • A tactical vest to organize gear
  • Comfortable clothing and footwear
  • Waterproof gear (ponchos, etc.)
  • Tools
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Spare food and water
  • Kill rags

For more information, see the previous blog which contains a section on what you need to play.
