Justifying the High-Cost of Umbrella Armory Airsoft Guns with a Close Look at the OCAW Banshee
Jan 23rd 2024
You’ve heard of G&G Armament, Elite Force, Lancer Tactical, and Arcturus Airsoft.
But have you heard of Umbrella Armory?
The company produces high-quality airsoft guns, predominantly AEGs, from the ground up, using the highest-performance parts available.
If you haven’t heard of them before, your first foray into the brand is probably going to produce a bit of sticker shock.
Even in a sport where high-end AEGs for experienced airsoft players can cost several hundred dollars, Umbrella Armory AEGs usually cost well over a thousand.
To explore this phenomenon, we’re going to look closely at the OCAW Banshee, one of the most expensive, and highest-performing, Umbrella Armory AEGs of the bunch.
Why Are Umbrella Armory AEGs So Expensive?
The primary reason that Umbrella Armory airsoft guns are so expensive is the amount of work that goes into them, along with the fact that the company uses only premium components in its builds.
They build competition-ready airsoft guns using only the highest-quality components, ensuring a high level of performance and customizability with each model.
With that said, let’s see what the OCAW Banshee offers.
The OCAW Banshee
Umbrella Armory’s OCAW Banshee, despite the fact that it is readily upgradeable, offers serious performance right out of the box. This you can expect from all AEGs that bear the Umbrella Armory name, and is no exception here.
The bones of the OCAW Banshee leave little doubt for what’s built around them. The thing is built like a piece of iron (figuratively). It is made with an aluminum alloy receiver, outer barrel, and buffer tube. The Midwest Industries M-LOK handguard is also made of aluminum alloy.
You may not need us to tell you that aluminum is lighter than steel and nearly as strong, all while being superior in the way of corrosion resistance.
Other key parts, including the motor grip and adjustable stop, are made from a high-strength polymer, which, like aluminum, is strong, light, and corrosion-resistant, minimizing required maintenance.
The thing is also built for performance, adjustability, and expandability, enabling you to customize it to fill the niche you need it to.
No two players are alike, and the OCAW Banshee is equipped with a PDW-style stock that adjusts, giving you the flexibility to create different lengths of pull. Overall length is adjustable between 27” and 31.5”.
It’s also fairly lightweight, which makes it maneuverable, a big bonus for CQB. All of this mentioned so far, and this AEG only tips the scales at 4.1 lbs.
It has a short barrel, too, at 5”, making it even better for close-quarters battling, but worry not - it’s ready to expand with an M-LOK handguard so you can add whatever optics, lights, or other airsoft attachments you so wish.
The outer barrel is also threaded, -14mm, so if you want to add airsoft accessories like a mock flash hider, an airsoft amp, or an airsoft tracer unit, the world is your oyster. (Although, to be fair, it also comes pre-configured with a Banshee amplifier, so there’s that.)
The OCAW Banshee is also geared for the utmost in terms of performance. Let’s start with the motor. It’s equipped with a brushless unit. Brushless electric motors offer a higher torque-to-weight ratio, increased efficiency and reliability, and less noise than their counterparts. Brushless motors also last longer, and experience no brush-and-commutator erosion (since there is no brush).
It also comes with a lapped, R-hop inner barrel. Lapping an airsoft barrel reduces or eliminates burrs, making them smoother, and therefore inherently more accurate, and the inclusion of an R-hop is even better.
R-hop systems, specifically a properly tuned R-hop system, enables airsoft players to hop heavier ammo, which is a bonus with a more powerful AEG like this. R-hop systems also deliver greater consistency, efficiency, and more consistent backspin, especially with heavier ammo. The long and short of the R-hop is that they enable longer, more accurate shots.
The OCAW Banshee is also powered by a brick-type, 3-cell 1300 mAh battery with a Deans connector, and there is a pre-installed, programmable ETU and MOSFET which protect your battery connections. It’s also built with an adjustable hair trigger, delivering what we can only call ridiculously crisp response.
So let’s talk about actual performance. With .2g airsoft ammo, the OCAW Banshee can deliver pretty high muzzle velocity out of the box, as high as 340 FPS, and blazing fast rates of fire, as high as 50 RPS with a 12.6V battery.
If that’s not enough for you, know this. This rifle, as geared towards performance as it is, still comes guaranteed by the people at Umbrella Armory. They cover it with a 1-year extendable warranty, so you can buy with peace of mind. And at this price, who wouldn’t want to?
Arguably the best part about the build is that, even if you don’t want to upgrade anything (why would you want to when it offers this sort of performance, anyway?) you easily could, especially with the right, high-performance airsoft gun parts.
Either way, the thing is stacked with performance-boosting parts and features and geared to offer uncompromising grit and performance right out of the box, whether or not you make any changes, anyway.
