Best Airsoft Gun Upgrades and Mods (and the Airsoft Gun Parts You Need to Replace)

Jul 25th 2023

There are some really great beginner airsoft guns out there that need little to no modding to offer some great out of the box performance.

Some of the best of these include the:

  • G&G Raider
  • G&G ARP9
  • Lancer Tactical Needletail
  • Lancer Tactical Gen 3 M4 Carbine
  • Lancer Tactical M4 SD
  • E&L AKM
  • E&L AK104
  • E&L AKS-74
  • Arcturus X C.A.T.
  • Arcturus AK-12
  • Acturus AK-74
  • Arcturus Karambit

This is just a short list, but these are some of the top choices for beginner airsoft guns and many of them offer features that are elevated above what you might expect from a beginner platform.

For instance, they all feature all-metal, upgradeable gearboxes and powerful motors. Some of them are LiPo ready and others feature tight-bore inner barrels and quick change springs, along with other upgradeable features.

On that note, upgradeability is one of the greatest potential attributes of any prospective beginner airsoft gun.

They all offer a high degree of upgradeability across the board.

Which means you can make meaningful upgrades to these and other platforms like them with airsoft gun parts like these.

1. Barrel

One of the simplest changes you can make to an airsoft gun to improve accuracy is to replace the inner barrel.

Many airsoft rifles already come with what are called “tight-bore” inner barrels, but the tighter the better.

If yours doesn’t have one, get a 6.02mm tight-bore barrel and install that. Tight bore barrels allow for less play between the BB and bore, resulting in more accurate shots at greater ranges.

Also, stainless steel tight-bore barrels are better than brass barrels because brass barrels are more prone to corrosion which will ruin the inner surface of the barrel.

2. Hop-Up Bucking

Replacing a hop-up bucking is not the easiest upgrade, but it can make quite a difference on range and accuracy.

The bucking is the part of the hop-up that contacts the BB in the hop chamber. Softer buckings are more suitable for low-velocity airsoft guns (like GBB pistols), so you’ll find that most Tokyo Marui buckings, for example, are soft.

High-powered AEGs do better with harder, more rigid buckings. Look into some of the top upgrades on the market and see if any of them make sense for your rifle.

3. Motor

Replacing the motor is another way to get more performance from your AEG. Your AEG’s motor will directly impact trigger response, rate of fire, and power.

There are two basic types of airsoft gun motors: high-torque and high-speed.

High-torque motors tend to deliver higher rates of fire and last longer than stock motors. High-speed motors may give an even higher rate of fire, but they don’t usually last as long.

What you should look for is a brushless motor made with rare-earth magnets, like neodymium, as these are the most powerful and will last the longest.

4. Spring

Probably the easiest, quickest, and most affordable way to boost your AEG’s power is to change the spring. Swapping out the spring will make your AEG shoot faster, without changing the rest of the gearbox or the motor.

Some AEGs, like many Arcturus AEGs, for instance, feature quick-change spring systems that don’t require you to entirely disassemble the gearbox if you want to upgrade the spring.

This should be the first upgrade you go for if you aren’t comfortable replacing the motor and you want to give your AEG an FPS boost.

5. Battery

Though not technically an airsoft gun part, the airsoft battery you pair with your AEG is going to have a big impact on performance.

Two basic options are NiCad batteries (which have been around forever) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Both of these options are relatively affordable and offer decent lifespans.

However, many modern beginner airsoft guns are Li-Po ready, and can accept lithium-polymer or lithium-ion batteries.

Li-Po batteries, specifically, offer excellent power and discharge rates and can give your AEG a substantial boost in terms of power and rate of fire.

They are, however, more expensive and harder to care for, and they should never be allowed to drain fully and then left dead, so be aware of that.

All the same, if your AEG is lithium-battery compatible, the few extra bucks are worth the boost in power.

6. MOSFET

Some AEGs come with metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors, and others do not. All AEGs can benefit from them, though.

Basically, what a MOSFET does is bypass the battery-trigger contacts, so that your trigger contacts don’t burn out prematurely.

This does two things: it extends trigger service life and seriously improves trigger response, creating a crisper trigger and enhancing rate of fire.

7. DEAN Connectors

If your AEG doesn’t come with DEAN connectors (some do) consider installing them yourself.

Basically, DEAN connectors establish better electrical connectors that are more heat resistant and physically stronger. This preserves the integrity of your airsoft rifle and makes it less likely that the connections will tear or burn out.

Because of this, they boost the performance of the AEG slightly and can even potentially improve rate of fire.

8. Rail Systems and Stocks

Most quality beginner airsoft guns come with rail systems like M-LOK or Picatinny systems that offer plenty of room for airsoft attachments, but if you’ve chosen one that doesn’t you may be able to switch the handguard.

The same goes for stocks. Most AEGs have modular, adjustable stocks, but you can also upgrade it if you don’t like the one that came with yours.

9. Grips and Optics

Last but not least we have grips and optics, which, though thy aren’t quite airsoft gun parts, definitely count as airsoft accessories.

You can add a vert grip to the bottom of your rail system to improve handling and some of them even fold up and out of the way.

Also, optics can make a big difference in AEG performance. Outfit your CQG carbine with a red dot scope or your spring-powered airsoft sniper rifle with a scope - either way, you’ll be more accurate and more effective at connecting with intended targets.
