Advice for Beginner Airsoft Players

Advice for Beginner Airsoft Players

Jan 18th 2024

Airsoft can be a very rewarding sport, but like all things, there can be a bit of a learning curve.

Take these tips to heart. They can help you out if you’re just getting started learning the ropes.

Don’t Buy Right Away

Airsoft gear and airsoft guns can be very expensive, and though there are some solid quality, affordably-priced beginner airsoft guns out there, it’s better to try before you buy.

Either go with a friend or find an airsoft event that will give you the option of renting airsoft gear, that way you can learn about the sport before you sink any real money into it.

Use ANSI-Rated Eye Protection

Airsoft fields will not let you play without eye protection, and ANSI-rated goggles, which are shatter-resistant and fully seal your eyes are best.

Alternatively, opt for a full face mask that will protect your cheeks, ears, and teeth. You don’t want to chip a tooth playing.

Learn the Rules of Engagement

Every airsoft field is liable to have its own unique rules but in general, observe the following:

  • Never yell at or taunt opposing players.
  • Do not speak if you are “dead”; wait to respawn.
  • Observe reasonable requests to surrender to avoid being shot at close ranges.
  • If another player asks you to hold their airsoft gun, be respectful.
  • Observe all FPS limits and respawn time limits.
  • Do not spawn camp.

Along with these, be sure to follow all other airsoft event rules. Contact the administrator or organizer ahead of time if you have any questions.

Dress Appropriately

Dress according to what you expect the weather to be, but always bring extra layers and waterproof clothing to be prepared.

Bring a spare pair of socks and a change of clothes for multi-day events.

Otherwise, you’ll want to wear heavy jeans to protect your legs as well as a thick denim or canvas jacket to protect your upper body.

Hand and Neck Protection

Your hands and neck will also need special protection. Consider wearing a shemagh scarf to protect your neck (they have lots of other uses) as well as a thick pair of protective leather or tactical gloves to protect your hands.

Wear Comfortable Boots

Proper footwear is essential. If it’s hot and dry, wear breathable tactical boots; if it’s going to be cold, wear comfortable, insulated boots.

Make sure they are well broken-in and comfortable. If you are not comfortable on your feet you will not enjoy the match.

Carry Your Airsoft Rifle the Right Way

Yes, there is a right way. Some beginners make the mistake of “chicken-winging” carrying their AEGs with their elbows sticking out at the sides.

This creates a bigger target for your opponents. Carry your AEG with the stock tucked into your shoulder and your elbows tight by your sides

Know the Difference Between Cover and Concealment

Cover will protect you from enemy fire. Concealment hides you but does not protect you from fire.

Both can be used to conceal your movements from the enemy.

Knowing the difference is crucial.

Don’t Fire Blind

Most airsoft fields have rules that disallow blind firing. You must be able to see what you are firing at.

So, don’t ever raise your airsoft gun and fire at anything if you can’t see what it is, and never fire around obstacles without looking at what you’re shooting at.

Know Minimum Engagement Distances

Most airsoft fields will not allow you to fire at an opponent that is too close to you in order to prevent injuries. Know the distance and stick to it.

Learn to Shoot from Different Angles

The challenge of airsoft is that shots don’t present themselves according to your timeline. You’ll get an opportunity when you get it, not when you want.

As a result, it is beneficial to practice firing from uncomfortable positions, as well as from different angles.

Unload Your Mags in Between Each Airsoft Event

Leaving your airsoft magazines loaded can compress the springs over time, making them less reliable. Unload them between each match.

Carry a Speedloader

A speedloader will save you in a match. Make sure to keep it in your tactical vest so you can reload spent mags during any downtime.

Never Reuse Airsoft Ammo

Never, ever reuse airsoft ammo. Once fired, even the slightest bit of dust on an BB will scratch your inner barrel, which will spell doom for accuracy.

Get a Bag and Barrel Cover

General prudence suggests that you should carry your airsoft gun cased when traveling or moving to or from the airsoft field.

Another good rule is to carry a barrel cover which you should place over the muzzle at any time when you are not actually using the airsoft gun.

Be Discreet

Never brandish an airsoft gun, on or off the field, as it is considered bad etiquette and can be dangerous.

Carry a Sidearm

You should always carry an airsoft pistol as a sidearm in a match, whether it be a gas blowback pistol or an airsoft revolver.

Hopefully, you will never need to draw it, but if your main airsoft gun goes down, you’ll be happy you had a backup.

Invest in a Basic Airsoft Tool Kit

In your collection of essential airsoft gear, you should invest in a basic toolkit to make adjustments or for field-stripping and cleaning your airsoft gun during or after an event.

Being prepared with the right tools can help you troubleshoot basic issues that might otherwise take you out of the match.
