A Short Intro to Airsoft Sniper Rifles
Oct 28th 2020
Airsoft sniper rifles don’t get as much press time as AEGs and sidearms like gas blowback pistols. They’re not practical for CQB, and most of them are not practical in a lot of different competitive situations. They are, however, very cool looking and fun to shoot and tinker with, and there are a couple of situations in which one would be valuable in the field.
Airsoft sniper rifles tend to be fairly heavy; they also usually have long barrels and are almost exclusively operated by a spring via a bolt action. As a result, they can provide only a slow rate of fire and they are not well balanced for maneuverability.
If you’re drawn to the look, feel, and function of these types of airsoft guns, here are some of the situations where one would really do well.
When Will an Airsoft Sniper Rifle Be Practical
Despite the fact that spring sniper rifles are heavy, usually imbalanced, and can only reach a low rate of fire, they are also usually very fast and fairly powerful, and with the right attention, they can be made very accurate, especially over a long distance. With the right tinkering with the spring and an adjustable hop-up system, you can have a fine-tuned machine.
Covering Long Distance
The first scenario in which you might prefer to have a spring-powered sniper rifle is when you are covering an open piece of territory over a long distance. In competitive play, the maneuverability, modularity, high rate of fire, and high capacity of an AEG will not be very valuable to you.
Instead, what would serve you well is a spring-powered rifle with a quality optic that will allow you to accurately reach out and make a shot count. When you’re working with long distances, the accuracy and power of a shot are worth much more than the speed of a follow-up shot. In fact, since snipers will often be working from a concealed location, a quick follow up shot is rarely necessary. At any rate, you’ll hardly ever be pressed for time for a follow-up shot, and if so, the half-second it takes you to cycle the bolt won’t spell doom for your team.
Reconnaissance
Sometimes the value of a sniper rifle comes entirely from its attachments and not from its ability to reach out over the field with a well-placed shot - though that is a bonus. Mount a high-quality scope on your sniper rifle and you’ll have a very valuable tool with you at all times.
In tactical planning, information is every ounce as valuable as manpower and the tools you will use in the execution of your strategy. Information requires one or two things, or both - it requires observation or dedication. With a powerful optic, observation will come to you much more easily.
To make short of the matter, a sniper rifle with a powerful scope is a useful tool for reconnaissance. If your team needs some intel, a well-placed sniper in contested territory can give you a lot of insight into enemy movements and more. That’s the type of thing that can give you a real edge in a match.
Just for Fun
Even if you aren’t sold on the use of a sniper rifle for competitive play - and let’s be honest, they just aren’t for everyone - they can just be plain old fun to use. In fact, fun sometimes translates into practice whereby you can hone your other skills.
Add an airsoft sniper rifle to your collection just for the fun of plinking that it can provide you. Spend some time in the back or at a range tinkering with the hop up and the scope to see how accurate you can make it. Practicing, or playing, with a spring rifle can help you hone your marksmanship skills. Plus, it’s a whole lot of fun to plink off old cans or to line up spent shotshells and snipe them down.
Whether you are interested in a spring sniper rifle for the fun of plinking or you actually want to take one into a match and play the strategic role of a sniper, just know that there are some unique situations in which a sniper rifle can be useful, even in a match.
