We get a lot of questions here at MiR Tactical, so we figured we’d answer some of them here. If you’re not close enough to visit us in our airsoft store, check out some of these FAQs and answers - and call us at 800-581-6620 if you need some more insight.

Does Airsoft Hurt?
Most airsoft guns shoot 6mm BBs that weigh between .20 and .40 grams, although there are heavier BBs as well as airsoft ammo in different sizes.

The majority of quality airsoft guns, regardless of operation, shoot between 200 and 400 FPS, although there are AEGs and sniper rifles that can reach 500 FPS, and with special mods, some may even exceed that.

Up close, with no protection, sure, that hurts. But most players play with very heavy clothing and other protective equipment. Eye protection is required at events and you should always wear eye protection even while plinking out back.

Taking that into account, coupled with the fact that BBs lose a lot of kinetic energy at larger distances, it really doesn’t hurt that much. You might not even notice it.

What Is the Point of Airsoft?
This is a common one. A lot of people ask questions like this, or “why would you want to buy an airsoft gun when you can buy a real one?”

The answer lies in the fact that they are not the same thing. A real gun and an airsoft gun fulfill vastly different purposes. Consider, for the moment, that people purchase and use firearms for target shooting, hunting, and self-defense. Airsoft guns are not particularly useful for those things.

By contrast, airsoft is a sport. It is a competition wherein players can test their mettle and their ability to formulate strategy. You can learn and grow through that sort of competition. The spring-powered, GBB and electric guns are simply tools we use to pursue this sport.

That is the reason that people buy airsoft guns.

Is Green Gas or CO2 Better? (Electric Is Also an Alternative)

Another common question we hear is whether green gas or CO2 is better, and here’s what we have to offer.

It’s not necessarily a case of one versus the other. Green gas and CO2 both have their advantages and disadvantages. Here’s how it breaks down.

●Advantages of CO2

○CO2 is typically loaded to higher pressures, which is harder on the airsoft gun, but also generally delivers higher muzzle velocities.

○CO2-powered guns typically kick harder, preferring more realistic recoil which some players prefer.

Advantages of green gas (which is typically propane with a little silicone added in as a lubricant)

○Green gas is not loaded to the same pressures (usually) so it’s typically easier on the airsoft gun.

○Green gas is usually more affordable than CO2.

○The silicone oil in it helps to lubricate the airsoft gun’s internals, resulting in lesser wear and tear in the course of normal play.

Keeping this in mind, it’s important to note that other types of airsoft guns have advantages over gas guns, such as electric guns. For example, gas blowback airsoft pistols are notoriously unreliable in the cold, whereas electric airsoft guns like AEGs remain highly reliable.

Why Is Airsoft So Expensive?
Once you get into the sport, you’re going to realize that airsoft can be very expensive. It doesn’t get the same sort of press that horseback riding, golf or fly fishing get for being expensive, but the costs can still rack up pretty quickly.

The reason is not just the airsoft guns themselves, although some high quality AEGs and even spring powered sniper rifles can cost several hundred dollars. It’s about the fact that players love to mod and upgrade their platforms, and attachments can be expensive - often nearly as much as the platform itself. Some optics, for example, are several hundred dollars.

How Can You Save on Airsoft Guns and Accessories?
The sport doesn’t have to be too expensive, as long as you’re smart about how you shop. Consider both of the following two tips for saving money.

Shop with a reputable seller
At MiR Tactical, we offer our customers multiple ways to save. For one, we offer low prices on our products and we cover them with a price match guarantee. We also offer flat rate shipping on all orders and free shipping on qualifying orders.

Consider a mystery box
Not that it’s a really targeted way to save money, but the value of all of our mystery boxes is guaranteed to be higher than the sticker price.

How Can I Become a More Effective Airsoft Player?
One of the greatest ways to get serious about the sport and get more into the strategic and tactical side of it is to participate in airsoft events, especially MilSim events. These events will get you involved with people with the same interests as you and will challenge you to be a more critical thinker and to learn new skills while honing existing ones.
