What Airsoft Accessories and MilSim Gear Do I Need for a Match?
Oct 4th 2023
Gearing up for a MilSim match? Then you need to know what MilSim gear and airsoft accessories to bring along.
Hopefully, this short guide will help you navigate through the finer points of Military Simulation.
General Rules: MilSim
The only general rule we can offer is that there are no “general” rules. The airsoft event organizer has the final say.
Get in touch with the organizer as early as possible and check with them to see what you need to bring. They will also let you know if you’re not permitted to bring something that you’re planning to take along.
MilSim Airsoft Guns
The first thing you will need to determine is what sort of MilSim airsoft gun you want to bring to the match.
Be aware that if this particular event is like a reenactment, you may not be able to bring “any old airsoft gun” along.
That’s alright, though. Here at MiR Tactical, we offer a wide variety of airsoft guns that are influenced by historically significant models. Some of the following are below.
Also, E&L Airsoft makes some really high-quality AK-47-inspired replicas. We also sell a couple of lever-action-inspired airsoft guns, like the Double Bell M1894 and the Legends Airsoft Saddle Gun.
As for more contemporary inspiration, we also sell numerous modern AEGs that, if they are permitted by the event organizer, would be excellent for MilSim. Some brands to check out are:
- Action Army (the Action Army AAP-01 is a great option)
- Arcturus Airsoft
- ASG Airsoft
- AW Custom
- Classic Army
- CYMA Airsoft
- Double Eagle (check out some of their airsoft shotguns for sale)
- E&L Airsoft
- Elite Force/Umarex (they make a bunch of great Glock airsoft guns)
- G&G (the G&G Raider and ARP9 are great options, the latter especially for CQB)
- JG Airsoft
- JAG Arms
- ICS
- KWA Airsoft
- Lancer Tactical
- Tokyo Marui (their hi-capa 1911-style airsoft pistols are great as sidearms)
- WE Airsoft
When you’re planning for a MilSim event, remember also that you don’t just need a main arm, whether it’s an airsoft rifle, an airosft shotgun, or an airsoft sniper rifle. You should also, always, carry a sidearm, which can save you.
Remember, one is none and two is one.
MilSim Gear: Tactical Equipment and Airsoft Accessories
Once you’ve figured out what sort of airsoft guns you’re going to carry in this event, and what role you’re going to play, you need to consider other MilSim gear.
This list is not exhaustive but it is a good place to start.
- Extra airsoft ammo: Carry at least 1000 spare rounds in your vest. Use a collapsible ammo canister.
- A speedloader: You’ll need this to reload your spent magazines whenever they run dry.
- Spare airsoft magazines: Carry between 6 and 10 loaded airsoft mags on you at all times, not including spare magazines for your sidearm, so the actual total should be closer to 12.
- Spare batteries, chargers, or gas.
- A flashlight and spare batteries.
- A multitool for field stripping and cleaning.
- Cleaning equipment/a cleaning kit.
- A bivi or tent and sleeping bag if it’s a multi-day MilSim
- A stove and cooking essentials.
- Firestarters/firemaking essentials.
- A mess kit.
- Matches/lighters.
- A canteen or water bottle, filled. Bring plenty of extra water, too.
- Any airsoft attachments you intend to use.
- An airsoft gun case.
- A sling for your rifle (aids in weapon retention if you need to draw your sidearm).
- A pen and paper.
- First aid essentials (at minimum a disinfectant agent and some bandages).
- Dry bags, in case it rains.
Clothing and Protective Gear
You also need to consider clothing. What you will wear will depend on the rules of engagement as well as the expected conditions, but it’s always better to be over-prepared than underprepared.
First, make sure you wear an appropriate uniform/camo pattern according to the rules of the event. Get in touch with the event coordinator if you are unsure of what team to choose and what the requirements are.
You will also (all things considered) want to bring along a tactical vest. This vest will help you store, organize and carry all your MilSim gear and airsoft accessories while ensuring you have easy access to everything.
You’ll also want to wear clothing that isn’t stifling but which will keep you warm in adverse conditions. Tactical pants and shirts are a good place to look; wicking clothing can keep you both cool and dry in all but very cold conditions. Remember you can take off extra layers but you can’t put on what you didn’t bring.
You will also want to bring a poncho or a rain jacket, just in case the weather turns south.
As for footwear, wear boots that are both warm and waterproof, while remaining breathable, as well as thick, comfortable socks. Hiking and tactical boots are both good options.
Always bring along spare clothing
Finally, you will want sturdy gloves to protect your hands, as well as either goggles (at minimum) or a full face mask.
Personal and Miscellaneous MilSim Gear
In addition to what we’ve covered so far, you’ll also probably want to bring along some other miscellaneous MilSim gear and personal items, such as:
- Spare cash
- Kill rags
- Personal hygiene essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, lip balm, any medication products you need)
- Towels/wipes
- ID
- A watch
- Map/compass
- Sunscreen/bug spray
- Duct tape (has lots of uses)
